If you think that cocoa is an ingredient for delicious chocolate cake, and coconut is a central ingredient of some of the tastiest curries, you’re right. However, both contain powerful ingredients that deliver a healthy punch to skincare products.
Many people use cocoa butter for their skin, as it helps provide extra moisture, but it also offers many other skincare benefits. Because cocoa butter is rich in fatty acids, it helps to hydrate and nourish your skin, and, being a natural substance, it’s great for sensitive skin. The cherry on the top: its rich and sweet scent gives an instantly uplifting feeling.
Cocoa butter can also work on acne marks, or those dreaded dark spots called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, left behind after blemishes heal. Although anyone can get blemishes, those with medium to olive complexions are more likely to develop hyperpigmentation. Cocoa butter will not magically erase your dark spots and acne, but its antimicrobial properties can help to fight and fade them.
Because cocoa butter melts at skin temperature, it easily penetrates and delivers its high concentration of those powerful antioxidants that your skin uses to prevent premature ageing. Containing some of nature’s most powerful antioxidants, it allows your skin to perform at its best. The polyphenols in cocoa butter may neutralise free radicals, preventing skin damage and wrinkles.
Cocoa butter is also naturally rich in oleic acid, which promotes cell regeneration to reveal younger looking skin. In a nutshell, cocoa butter is one of the few ingredients that can function as a skin barrier to protect your skin from the ageing effects of sun, wind, and environmental pollutants.
Not all coconut oil is created equal.
According to Healthline.com, refined coconut oils use a chemical process, extracting the oil with chemical solvents which means they may be harsher on your skin. Unrefined coconut oils don’t contain any chemicals which make them gentler on the skin and are therefore the best choice for your skincare regime. If possible, go for a cold-pressed oil which contains more of the compounds your skin needs.
On a cautionary note, bear in mind that the use of coconut oil as an overnight beauty mask is not suitable for all skin types as it may contribute to blockage of the pores. It is not a recommended overnight treatment for those with oily or acne-prone skins
There are so many beauty benefits of coconut oil, it’s impossible to list them all. We’ll leave you with a few of our favourites:
• Hangnails: Massaging coconut oil into your cuticles and the skin around your nails gives much needed moisture to your hands and nails, helping to fend off cracked skin and hydrate your nails.
• Cracked heels: If you suffer from cracked heels, massage in some organic coconut oil and cover with cotton socks.
• Cracked paws: Even our furry friends need a little pampering sometimes! If your fur baby suffers from cracked paws, rub on a little coconut oil. It’ll function as both an antiseptic and moisturiser. While topically applying coconut oil should be safe for most dogs, check with your vet before you give it a try.
